First Solar Road for Bikers

We humans can't stop travelling and to travel we need roads - its a necessity. Some travels in day and some at night. At both times, we need energy to travel. Confused ?

Lets make it easy for you. In day time, we use the sunlight (don't miss that light is a form of energy) and during night, we use street lights. Finding it stupid ? If yes, then think once again because government at Netherlands is taking much interest into this.

Sun is the ever hot ultimate source of energy. And, as brightness of the Sun is ever lasting, there is no doubt that Solar energy too has a bright future for serving as energy to us.
So, some creative innovators at Netherlands have thought of combining roads with solar energy.
The concept is called as 'Solar Roads'.

Solar Road, as the name depicts - is a road that is capable of converting sunlight into energy. The first solar road is laid in Netherlands and is now officially open for traffic use.

  • It is actually a 230-foot long path and is available for use by bikes only in the town of Krommenie.
  • The road is made for testing purpose only.
  • The developer of this Solar road is the company SolaRoad.
  • The path is made of concrete modules with lots of solar cells embedded inside it and covered with a thin layer of tempered glass.
The concept is simple but different and much promising. The energy produced by the road can power up our streets, traffic signals and can be used for household purposes also.

The company would test this route for next three years and if it fruits up then undoubtedly, Netherlands will be put up on map as a leader in sustainable innovation.
